How to Pay Income Tax in India: Tax Slabs, Calculation, and Online ITR Filing Guide

Whether you are a salaried employee, a business owner, a freelancer, or an online earner, understanding income tax is important. In India, income tax depends on your taxable income, the type of income you earn, and the tax regime you choose. This guide explains the tax slabs, tax calculation, and online income tax return filing process in simple English.

    1. What Is Income Tax?

Income tax is a tax imposed by the government on taxable income earned by individuals and other taxpayers. Your income may come from salary, business, freelancing, house rent, bank interest, or online activities. Different types of income may have different tax rules.

    2. Income Tax Slabs for FY 2026–27

Under the new tax regime, the ordinary income tax slabs for FY 2026–27 are:

    • Up to ₹4 lakh: Nil
    • ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh: 5%
    • ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh: 10%
    • ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh: 15%
    • ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh: 20%
    • ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh: 25%
    • Above ₹24 lakh: 30%

These rates apply to different portions of taxable income. They do not mean that your entire income is taxed at the highest rate you reach.

    3. How Much Tax Is Payable on ₹12 Lakh Income?

Under the new tax regime, an eligible resident individual may receive a rebate under Section 87A of up to ₹60,000 on ordinary taxable income of ₹12 lakh. Therefore, the income tax payable may be zero if the individual qualifies for the full rebate and has no income taxed at special rates.

Eligible salaried employees may also benefit from a standard deduction of ₹75,000, potentially making salary income up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free under these conditions.

    4. How Is Income Tax Calculated?

Suppose your taxable income is ₹15 lakh under the new tax regime. A simplified calculation is:

    • First ₹4 lakh: Nil tax
    • Next ₹4 lakh at 5%: ₹20,000
    • Next ₹4 lakh at 10%: ₹40,000
    • Remaining ₹3 lakh at 15%: ₹45,000

Total income tax: ₹1,05,000. A 4% Health and Education Cess would add ₹4,200, making the total ₹1,09,200 before considering any applicable relief, credits, or special-rate income.

    5. How to File an Income Tax Return Online

    1. Visit the official website: Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
    2. Log in using your PAN and the required credentials.
    3. Open the e-File section and select Income Tax Return.

    7. Does Everyone Need to Pay Income Tax?

Not everyone who earns money has to pay income tax. Your tax liability depends on taxable income, applicable rebates, the chosen tax regime, and the nature of your income. In some circumstances, filing an ITR may be compulsory even when no tax is payable.

    • Compare the old and new tax regimes before making your choice.
    • Review Form 26AS and AIS to identify any reporting differences.
